Tessa's Ascension Fundraising Event

March 29th, 2009 - Posted by lehigh sheppard

On March 21st, Santa Fe Ski Patrol hosted the 4th annual Ascension. The event raised $1250 dollars to help people with breast cancer in meeting their treatment and rehabilitation needs. The event is also a way to honor our dear friend and co-worker Tessa Horan. Tessa was killed in a shark attack in Tonga while serving in the Peace Corps. She dedicated her life to helping others, to restoring the health of our planet, and to enjoying healthy outdoor activity, as exemplified by the Ascension, which involves a challenging endurance climb to the top of Aspen Peak (11,250') and racing down a giant slalom course back to the base of the mountain.

We are dedicated to remembering her every year by holding this event to benefit a worthy cause in our community. Through our own personal challenges we are reminded that social change can seem like an uphill battle but if we all get involved and work together great things can be accomplished. Thank you to K2 for supporting us in this event. Please join us next year for Tessa's Ascension. For more information on this event please visit sfpatrol.org and click on Tessa's Ascension.

TSV's Breast Cancer Fundraiser

March 25th, 2009 - Posted by adriana

dsc_31382One of the coolest things for me about the Alliance is the partnership with the Breast Cancer Foundation. In order to be a part of the movement to raise funds for breast cancer research in a small way, I agreed to model (yup, makeup, big hair, catwalk - the whole shebang) for a the breast cancer awareness fundraiser in Taos Ski Valley last weekend. It was completely worth the embarrassment of walking the catwalk to render my brother (who was the MC) speechless by doing so in hot pink pajamas, but what made it really great was that we raised nearly $10,000! I highly recommend finding one of these events and doing something out of the box to help raise money for a cause you believe in, it is surprisingly gratifying! All though, just that would have made it worth it,

Whistler…Wow!

March 21st, 2009 - Posted by beth jahnigen pappas

I was lucky enough to be invited on a trip to Whistler in February for Ski Press Magazine and was reminded what an incredible place it is. I haven’t been since ’05 and I truly forgot how much that place has to offer. In addition to world-class skiing – it snowed 3 feet while I was there – they debuted the record-breaking Peak 2 Peak Gondola in December, which connects Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains with a breathtaking 11-minutes lift ride. I am not exaggerating when I say, if you are afraid of heights, take a shot of tequila before climbing aboard! It’s impressive to say the least. Speaking of shots, the dining and après options in Whistler are unreal. If you go, I recommend checking out the Bearfoot Bistro’s oysters and champagne après!

Girls Weekend in NC

March 20th, 2009 - Posted by susannah

A few girls and I headed back up to Sugar Mtn. for one of the last ski weekends of the season.  All of our husbands are in the Marine Corps together and all three of theirs are currently deployed overseas.  I figured it was the perfect time for a girls' trip.  As we came into town it was raining, but  I knew the snow was coming.  It started snowing the next morning and by evening we had 12 inches.  Can you believe we had a bit of powder in the south?!

K2 also had a demo for the local shops with 09/10 equipment.  Still lovin' the Burnin' Luvs down south!

Ski Like a Man?

While this may double as shameless self-promotion of my current Mountain Girl column in Ski Press Canada, I couldn’t help posting it considering the subject matter - why I personally don’t want to ski like a man!

If you can’t read it here, check it out at http://skipressworld.com/ca/index.php/canadavol23no3-8.html then go to page 14.

Let me know what you think about the pros and cons of skiing like the opposite sex!

Deer Valley is posh and awesome!

So we finally got some of that famous Utah powder - maybe 8" of really nice, light, fluffy snow. Me and my posse headed back to Deer Valley. We were all so pleasantly surprised with the conditions and terrain there. Everyone knows about the awesome grooming and food, which is all true. So no crazy deep Utah snow, but a good time for sure. Deer Valley extended a generous PSIA discount, which makes this resort even more attractive. On the down side, I had to demo some skis to cope with the groomed  conditions today. The only current K2 skis the shop had were the One Luvs, so I opted for last year's Lotta Luvs. The edges were thrashed and the skis were pretty beat up overall. It was sad to think of some woman demo-ing these skis and thinking that's how this ski performs. I did ask the shop to clean up the edges, which they did & added a hot wax, so that was pretty nice. Oh well, I guess you can't expect a Furtney-tune (El's hubby) from just any Joe.
