Blog of a K2 Intern
Prior to my first day at K2 I emailed the Ski Marketing Coordinator, Andrew, with a few last minute questions. Mainly, what is appropriate work attire? To which he responded: “…you will want to have your shoes shined and briefcase polished. We usually stick to Windsor or half-Windsor knots, and Fridays are casual, so you can wear a zany Hawaiian shirt on those days. No hats, and we expect a haircut that you can set your watch to.”
So I find myself thinking: hmmm… my footwear collection is a plethora of deteriorating vans, the only Windsor I know is a county in Vermont, and I’m rockin’ a 'fro that rivals Art Garfunkel's on the cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water in 1970. As a three-fifths compromise with Andrew, for my first day I shaved my face and sported my finest Izod men’s performance button down t-shirt.
My first few hours at K2 consisted of a pee test, finger printing, shaking hands, and forgetting names. But after a questionable start, Andrew took me on the grand tour. The giant building in Seattle’s industrial district is jam packed with cool stuff. Funny photos and retro gear line the walls, helping me understand the rich history of K2. There is a skate park, a trampoline, and a freezer at least the size of Eminem’s trailer in 8 Mile where engineers test equipment in wintery conditions. Walking through the warehouse is like walking in Manhattan; the rows seem to go on for days. And then there’s the Ski Marketing department: a full service bar, big screen television, leather couches, ski chairs, and racks upon racks of Jack Links beef jerky. My eyes were popping out of my head.
And then reality set in. As with any internship, there is a certain degree of female dog work. I cleaned the most intricate yet dangerous looking mold out of the kegerator. I de-funkified the coffee machine so these Seattleites could enjoy their morning cup o’ joe. And I tidied up "The Cage:" a landfill of the ski marketing department’s gear.
However, once I completed the tedious work, I got to participate in some pretty cool stuff. Everything at K2 is done in house (accounting, advertising, product shooting, ect.), which is pretty remarkable for a large company. So a few of the guys: Jeff, Gutt, Powell, Andrew, Joe, and Ryan were brainstorming for a new ad campaign for the A.M.P. Series in Europe, and I got to participate. I had just as much of a voice as everyone else, and it was only my second week in the office. Being an intern isn’t always glorious. I have suffered injustices, I’m the butt of incessant jokes, but somehow they still manage to make me feel like part of the team.

Winter Project film trip in Andörja, Norway
Andörja is a grope of islands located in the northern part of Norway between Narvik and Tromsö. The area is famous for its summer sea fishing but fairly unexplored to freesking until a few years ago. Andörja is a Island full of peaks and 10 of them is over 1000meters straight down in the Norwegian fjords.

Our contacts in Norway pulled their strings in the county of Ibaestad and Troms to get a landing permission on the island of Andörja. Early February we got the permission to land at almost all peaks on the island from middle of March until May. So now started planning the trip!

It snowed a lot in March and April but the whether never cleared up.. A bit frustrating for all of us in the crew, all of us wanted to get up there bad! Then we saw a weather window in end of april and got up there. I hooked up with Nicke Jacobsson from Winter Project, Olof Larsson and FRWT winner Janette Hargin and took a flight to Narvik/Harstad. From there we moved on whit speedboat to the village of Engenes on Andörja . Engenes is a fishing village with all its 50 residents..

First day the whether looked pretty good so we decided to go up in high altitude whit the heli and check out the snow. A few days earlier we got reports of fresh snow up there but the night we arrived the temperature rose and as we made it up we discovered that the pow just gone wet!

We decided to stay a few days as we saw the wind was changing and a new storm was coming in. A few days became a week and the storm was still hanging over us with a lot of wind, fog and rain. After 9 days of waiting we saw the mountains in the evening for the first time in a week, and decided to call in the heli.

5am next day the Heli landed outside our cabin and the weather was perfect! I stood on top of my first line 6am and looked out of a scenery worth waiting for!

See the result of the trip in the up coming Winter project movie that’s realized for free on Internet this autumn!

Seth Morrison Awards Free K2 Skis for LIFE to Andreas Fischbacher
This past Wednesday the five finalists, the gold ticket winners, were flown to K2 headquarters in Seattle for a chance to prove to Seth Morrison that they were the best candidate to receive free skis for life. The contestants arrived Tuesday night and were presented with blank Obsethed top sheets to create custom designs for their skis they would be molding the next day. Seth flew directly from Chamonix and did not arrive until Wednesday morning, but Sean Pettit was there.

Wednesday was a day packed full of challenges for the contestants including a meat throwing contest, ski building, obstacle course, jello eating and more. They were required to wear their ski boots and ridiculous spandex outfits for the entire day.

At the end of the day each contestant presented the custom skis they built and Seth chose the winner.

Coming out on top and winning free skis for life was Andreas Fischbacher. Andreas is an 18 year old from Austria. He works as a bricklayer so he can have winters off to ski. Now he has the ski of his choice, a new pair every other year from K2 skis!

FWQT in Roldal with Christian Reichenberger
The last competition of the season is over and the FWT 10/11 came to its end.
After a 12th place on day 1 and a second place on final day 2 I finished in 6th place! Unfortunately that’s not enough to get into the FWT 2012 next year. But Röldal was definitely one of the hardest comps, regarding the level of riders, I’ve ever participated!
cheers
